Teen Dies After Falling Off Cruise Ship
Cruises are supposed to be fun, but accidents and deaths do happen on them from time to time. Accidents such as slips and falls and bouts of food poisoning do happen regularly, but something more tragic that people don’t always think about is people falling off balconies.
A teen was killed in November after he fell off a balcony on a Royal Caribbean ship. It is still unknown the circumstances that caused the 16-year-old boy to fall.
The teen fell from a balcony on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas ship on November 25. The Allure of the Seas had just begun a three-day cruise when the fatal incident occurred. The ship was between Port Canaveral, Florida, and Nassau, Bahamas at the time.
The teen did not go overboard but instead landed on the ship’s deck. It is unknown if the fall was intentional. First responders attempted life-saving treatments on the boy. He was taken to a hospital after the fall, but he later died.
Passengers on the ship were alerted to the situation after the ship made an announcement asking for passengers willing to donate blood early that morning. Pictures taken by a passenger show yellow crime scene tape on a balcony and one area of the deck blocked off by a blue tent and temporary wall.
A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean did not address the fall or give any further details about what happened, but did say that one passenger had died. They gave a statement saying that they are saddened to learn of the passing of a guest.
Falls happen on cruise ships for various reasons. However, overboard incidents are not common, given that the railings in cruise ships have to be at least 42 inches tall. So when people do fall, it is because of reckless or intentional behavior. Alcohol is often involved. Sometimes people strive to get the perfect selfie or recreate a movie scene and tumble over in the process.
