Common Causes of Spinal Cord Injuries

Here’s a look at some of the more common causes of spinal injuries we represent clients for in litigation:

  • Slip and Falls: When a victim slips and falls in a public place or at someone’s private home, the property owner could be liable in certain instances. Was there a safety hazard that the owner knew about or should’ve reasonably known about? If so, you could have a premises liability claim.
  • Car Accidents: Serious car accidents can leave victims with catastrophic injuries, including spinal cord damage. Spinal cord injuries can occur in any type of auto accident, but rollovers and head-on collisions are among the most common.
  • Medical Malpractice: Medical malpractice can cause or worsen a spinal injury. Doctors owe their patients a certain standard of care; otherwise, they could be held liable for negligence in a medical malpractice lawsuit.

Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

There are several types of spinal cord injuries, including incomplete and complete. An incomplete spinal cord injury is where some signals are being received in the brain. Those signals allow for some sensation function or degree of movement. The amount of movement depends on how severe the injury is.

A complete spinal cord injury is where no signals are sent to the brain. Victims will lose all nerve and motor function. They will have no sensation below the point of injury on the spine. Victims are left totally paralyzed.

When you suffer a spine injury, you will typically go into traction or have a cervical halo to prevent further damage and stabilize the spine. You may need to undergo surgery which will relieve pressure on the spinal cord. The surgeon will remove any fractured vertebrae that could be compressing on the spinal cord. The other purpose for surgery is to stabilize the spine by installing screws, plates, and rods.

Once the surgery is concluded, doctors can assess the long-term damage and whether there is any possibility of restoring any function to the spine. You may need to undergo physical and occupational therapy at this point.
