Man Killed in Crash at Construction Site

ConstructLitig

Construction workers are necessary to erect buildings and improve roads. Unfortunately, though, it is a tough job. It’s a job that requires a lot of physical strength. It’s also a dangerous job, with many construction workers injured and killed every year.

Sadly, a construction worker was killed while walking along a construction site in Crawfordville. The fatal accident occurred on the  afternoon of January 18 on Bloxham Cutoff Road.

A 76-year-old man from Freeport was driving a van and heading east on Bloxham Cutoff Road, near Rock Road. The van exited the right side of the roadway for unknown reasons and ended up on the dirt shoulder.

At the same time, a 39-year-old construction worker from Tallahassee was walking on the shoulder. The van’s front bumper and windshield collided with the man. After the crash, the man ended up on the south shoulder. The van pulled over to the south shoulder.

The construction worker was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, where he later died.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. Criminal charges are pending.

Construction Zone Safety

Road work can be frustrating for motorists, but they need to follow the laws and stay safe in construction zones. Driving recklessly or engaging in random maneuvers can lead to serious or even fatal accidents, as seen in this case. Here are some ways in which you can stay safe:

  • Do not speed in construction zones, as this can lead to an accident. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Be alert. You may have to slow down or change lanes, so expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Construction workers are trying to do their jobs and often have little protection in the event of an accident, so drive with caution.
  • Don’t change lanes unnecessarily. Workers may be in the adjacent lanes, so stay in your lane but anticipate lane shifts. Only merge or change lanes when directed to do so.
  • Avoid distractions while driving in work zones. Don’t use your phone or engage in other distractions while in construction zones. Keep your eyes on the road.
  • Turn on headlights so others can see you. This is especially true in the early morning and late night hours, when it’s dark and visibility is limited.
  • Expect delays. Don’t be in a hurry when in a construction zone. You might have to be stopped for 10-20 minutes, so leave extra early if you have to be somewhere at a certain time and be patient.
