Horrific DUI Crash Kills Mother

CarCollision

If your blood alcohol content (BAC) was almost five times the legal limit, would you even be able to work? Apparently one Florida woman was able to get behind the wheel of her vehicle and T-bone another vehicle, killing a mother of three.

The fatal accident happened on the morning of May 22 in Winter Springs. The Sanford woman, a 25-year-old bartender and restaurant manager, was arrested at her home later that evening.

She faces multiple criminal charges, including DUI with blood alcohol of 0.08 or more, vehicular DUI homicide, DUI with property damage, and DUI causing injury.

The woman was late for work and in a hurry as she drove her Toyota. She was speeding when she ran a red light and T-boned a Honda at the intersection of State Road 434 and Vistawilla Drive in Winter Springs. It is unknown how fast she was going, although the speed limit in the area is 50 miles per hour.

Inside the Honda was a woman and two of her three children – a 9-month-old girl and a 4-year-old girl. Both were in car seats in the back seat of the Honda. The woman’s friend was driving behind her at the time, as they had just left a running club meeting.

The 4-year-old girl suffered minor injuries. The mother was taken to the hospital, where she later died. While the kids are OK physically, the family is understandably upset.

The woman who caused the accident was also under the influence. In fact, her blood alcohol level was at 0.386, which is nearly five times the legal limit of 0.08. The woman claimed she

drank her last alcoholic beverage at about 1:30 a.m. She left her home at 9:40 a.m. to go to work and the crash happened at around 10:00. The Winter Springs Police Department says a BAC that high is very rare, especially if the woman was being truthful and had not drunk alcohol for at least eight hours before the crash.

The Winter Springs Police Department is working closely with the State Attorney’s Office on the case. This was not the woman’s first arrest. She has had traffic citations as well as prior misdemeanor arrests for criminal mischief. She was held in Seminole County Jail without bond, but has since bonded out. A GoFundMe was created for the victim’s family and raised almost $100,000.
